If you want only certain items visible on a SP page to a certain membership group, you need to add a security trim around that particular item (code view).

SP Webpart Connections

Scenario: Have two or more lists connected by a single or multiple identifiers (similar to access table structure connections). You want to view particular information in a web part page based on inputs from one list to another.

So for example, the main list has all the project information listed for each project or a project. You are in display view for a project and you want the subtasks from a separate list connected by project field to be visible for only that project. This can be accomplished by utilizing webpart connections.

Using SPD to Create Connections – Custom Page
(use SPD for single list items –example: one project (in display or edit view) and one or multiple subs
1. Start off with plain aspx page (my preference)
2. Add a table with rows (my preference – others ways to do this)
3. Insert your main (project – display view) as a custom list form or list form in display view (only one item will display)
4. Insert your other subs (in web part view)
5. For each webpart inserted
a. Click web part connections
b. Get sort/filter from (main – example project)

c. Connect to a webpart page

d. Select connecting fields (don’t mess with input fields on right hand side)

e. Create hyperlink on field

f. Finish
6. Now attach master page (default normally)
a. Format – Master Page – Attach Master Page
7. Save new view to your main (example projects) list library
8. Underneath list properties (main) list library
a. Go to supporting files tab
b. Select new display page
c. Hit apply

9. Test in IE by opening (main) list item [Example Project X] to see if main and subs show and are connected.

List Connections on Webpart Page Online
(note both webparts have to have same filter field visible for this to work)
1. Add webparts to page
2. In edit mode on main list or sub, you want to provide row to other list or you can filter
3. Follow prompts
Depending on how you setup your connections, you will click on list item (this would be identified as list that provides information or filter) based on list item you clicked information in the other list will filter or only show information that relates to that list item.

Using SPD 2007 with Windows 7 & Office 2010

If you have Windows 7 and SPD 07 installed on your computer, you are going to have some problems opening Office files in SPD. If you want to open a file from SPD, right click on the file and click view in browser. You will automatically be prompted to open document in correct Office program.

You will also have problems opening Office documents from the browser (SP site) with Windows 7 in Internet Explorer. Workaround – open in a different browser like Firefox or Chrome. Issue I experience: you can open documents in read only format but not edit. Even if you change rendering of FireFox to IE, you still won’t be able to.

Weebly – Free Web Hosting

Anybody familiar with Weebly? I just found out about this hosting site. They offer free web hosting w/o adds for free. I’m actually surprised. The reviews are mixed b/c some say you can’t get web hosting for free w/o advertising. It looks easy to use with a nice interface but the bad thing is that your domain name will be xyzz.weebly.com

They do have paid versions to. I’m going to try it out. More to come. If you own a domain name, you can use it or purchase one (another advantage). You don’t have to use theirs.

A few recommendations
1. If you want search engines to be able to find you, never make your entire site in Flash
2. If you want to enhance a page, use stock images. You can find some really good ones just by searching online. It usually don’t cost much to purchase a high quality one.
3. There are a lot of good CMS out there. I like Joomla. If you are looking for a more collaborative environment, maybe website, Intranet, Extranet, Portal, or workspaces for project teams, SharePoint is the way to go.
4. Design is not the first step. To do it right, you’ve got to do your homework and build a foundation to your concept. Make a plan. Educate yourself. Research. Don’t forget your clients. Branding & tie in to existing identity
5. Websites serve a purpose and continual maintenance and updating is required.

Addressing Critical Issues Within Your Companies
I attended a meeting where the featured speaker, a president of a supplier of new and re-manufactured part discussed how to address critical issues within companies. A lot of what he discussed would apply to any organization. Some of the key points from his presentation are listed below:
- Don’t lose control of your company.
- You should restructure your operation (re-look at everything with discipline). If restructure balance sheet, you end up owning it.
- DISCIPLINE every issue, every business, every week (Product, Price, Productivity, People = profit)
- Every single day, pay attention to what is going on in your business.
- People think rationally they just may see things differently than you do.
- Need to bring change and discipline, as well as, determine what people can be rewarded for and fired for.
- Financial restructure doesn’t equal business restructure.
- When you go into organizations, you have to realize there is a lot of learned behavior that has to be fixed.
- Understand your challenges
- Price – key customer
 Negotiate extended contract
 Increase overall profitability
 Have courage to speak up and need to make sure making return for the company’s future, shareholders, and employees. Companies can’t be afraid to lose business or give it back.
- Productivity
 Cut costs and eliminate waste you don’t even know you have
 Reduce overall company headcount
 Eliminate facilities
 Don’t liquidate your most critical people but you also have to be productive. If you don’t make tough calls, you will end up sentencing everyone.
- Culture
 Integrity
 Accountability
 Pay for Performance
 No Job for non-Performance
 Candor and Debate
 Analytics
- Start every meeting with integrity (everything we do) simplicity (how can make things really simple) Execution (is the whole game) Endurance (need endurance to execute). Only when you do these things can you have any sense financially.

I attended an AAF event today at Kent Country Club. The featured speaker was Paul Gillin and he talked about the Secrets of Social Media Marketing. As with most things, you can always learn something new and I definitely today. Some of the takeaways are listed below:

1. Small is the New Big

a. Big and expensive is being ignored.

b. It’s all about talking to people in small markets and aggregating together into bigger ones

2. You are the Media

a. You have a choice. You can either be useful (helpful) or invisible.

i. Search 2 Grow provides the best leads because people are coming to you because they have a problem that needs to be solved.

b. Websites with blogs attract 97% more inbound links. Search engines love blogs.

c. Low cost but not easy

3. Be Helpful (Educate Your Audience)

a. Share everywhere

b. Goal. Generate leads

c. Advise and Inform

i. Build a community around a passion not a brand

4. Tools Don’t Matter (Have a Plan and Strategy)

a. Strategy comes first not tools

i. Start with a business goal

ii. Decide how to measure

iii. Map back to tactics

iv. Go to tools (You can get some value out of any tool but you need to know where your audience is – what communities are they apart of?)

5. Tools Easy , Execution Complicated

a. Need patience (For the first six months, you won’t get any attraction (new domains). As you begin to generate content and inbound links, Google will see you as being legitimate.

b. Engage with your audience. Don’t just put a blog, Facebook page, et cetera up and leave it. You need to interact with your audience.

6. Know the Power of 130

a. Average Facebook member has a 130 friends, which is 130 impressions and each of their friends has 130 impressions and so on

7. Match Your Voice to Platform

a. Humanize your message

8. Amplify Message

a. Use different social media tools

b. Spread message – you are your own syndicator and remove registration walls (free content)

c. Syndicating content and creating relationships is what works

9. Measure

10. Have Fun

Search engine optimization is many things, it’s an art and it’s a science. SEO creative and it’s technical. It’s logical, parasitic and opportunistic. SEO helps you optimize your site so you give the search engines, especially Google, what they need. As a result, your site will come up higher in the search results.

There is a lot that goes into search engine optimization. You can expect success right away. It is an ongoing process/continuous improvement.
• If a site links to you from a page with a lot of links, the link strength decreases.
• You want to link to sites in your industry that the big “players” in your industry link to.
• See who links to your competitors and try to link to them as well
• Join social networks for links themselves but also content. This is another way to get your content noticed.

XSLT Data View Customization

So you want a field to link to a view, new, edit, or display view.

Well first things first create list view

Then in web part page create a data view web part or convert a regular web part view into XSLT using SPD

Right click on field, click format item as and select hyperlink to and select list

Walla you are done
